Mixtapes:

III Ep - Tinchy Stryder's pre album mixtape: Tinchy definitely wants to maintain his underground presence. There are seven tracks here and they're all a bit more grimey sounding. It starts off with him going back to back with his Ruff Sqwad team. "Used to go out for the money, but now I go in." It definitely shows that Tinchy can MC with some nice wordplay as there are some good tracks here. The track "Famous" is a highlight.

Chipmunk & Wretch 32: More fun

Chipmunk and Wretch 32 decided to go on a lyrical exercise with this 'More Fun' mixtape put out earlier this year. Wretch 32 has always been known for his lyrical prowess and he doesn't disappoint with his bars. On 'It's over (drop the world)' he raps: "I hit the stage and keep the flow sharper than sixty blades." Chipmunk definitely takes the opportunity to bring out his lyrical armoury as well and remind people that he can rhyme. Chipmunks Woo riddim freestyle is where he spits some of his coldest bars. The track "All I do is win" featuring Skepta & Scorcher is a highlight.

Wiley Zip files:

Wiley is easily the biggest character in UK music, full stop. The story of him releasing these zip files is as legendary as his Ustream antics. Over 200 tracks and most of them are songs that you could hear ringing off on 1xtra or any other radio station for that matter. There were so many tracks to listen to it took me over a week to even download and hear them all. Some of the best tracks are the "Elusive intro" and "What they want". With all these tracks and his wiley antics you can't forget why he's such an entertainer and the Godfather of a whole genre of music. If you like grime and you can't find a song you really like in this batch then you're a complete myth. There's over 100 free songs here for God's sake.

Currensy:

Currensy has had one of those careers where you have heard him all over the place but you know he hasn't blown yet. I think that's the best thing about Currensy as if you're having a conversation about rappers and you mention him you always end up sounding really cool. Because Currensy is probably one of the best rappers out there. A wordplay king. Any rapper that can sit on beats with Lil Wayne and hold his own has to be respected. But, over the years his flows, content and beats have carved out a real niche. His Smokey Robinson mixtape is some of the best music you can pick up for free. "Mazaltov" & "Reset" are probably the best tracks on this mixtape where he raps "Second in the presence of better, me first". Also the mixtape "How Fly" with him and Wiz Khalifa is dope.

Very wise words coming from the sassy North London Trio, Daddy’s Girls. Daddy’s girls are an R’N’B and hiphop group consisting of three sexy ladies. They rap and sing in an old skool destiny child/ TLC vibe. But, at the same time these girls are fresh and they know how to make GOOD MUSIC and have great style.

‘Life Begins with Lyrics’ what a brilliant title for their mixtape. As soon as I heard the Intro I was hooked on it. I can instantly tell a lot of hard work was put into this, from the melodies to the lyrics. The overall quality of the production is fresh and the tunes are original music inspired by a whole spectrum of topics; from life to lies. I can really see this band going somewhere because the UK just doesn’t have anything like it at the moment. So I AM LDN had a little chat with them. I AM LDN x Daddy’s Girl.

How’s it all going? Give us an introduction to yourselves and your name.

We’re very good thank you. Why Daddy’s Girls? – Well, we were in New York a few years back and we noticed a girl with the name on a tattoo. Years later, when we were trying to find a name for the group, that tattoo flashed back. We agreed instantly that was it! It’s a bit ambiguous, it can be interpreted as sweet or sassy and it just seems to sum us up!

What has pushed you guys to produce your own music?

Well, we’ve always been performers. Back at school if there was any type of dance competition or play going on, we were fully involved. People were used to seeing us up on stage. And, as kids we all used to perform little songs to our parents. But it wasn’t until Uni that we got into music as a group. We entered the Uni talent show, but didn’t have time to choreograph a dance routine, so we randomly decided to write a song instead. We used Wiley’s Eskimo beat and people loved it! By the end of the song the audience were singing back the chorus ‘Dem man get slew…’ Not sure what made us believe we could rap, but we did it, it worked and we haven’t looked back since!

Where have you performed and what are your highlights of the journey so far?

We’ve mainly performed at quite intimate shows for unsigned acts. Our first and most recent show was Style and Substance. It was there, a year ago, that we first performed our song Friday Night and officially launched ourselves.

Highlights so far … it would definitely have to be releasing the mixtape. We sweated over that for a year - spending our own money, writing and recording after work, as well as trying to build a following. Every time we finished a song we were bursting to show everyone, so it’s nice to finally let people hear it and say they’re feeling it like we are. We’re at a nice time right now. Everything is a new experience - being in the studio is really fun!

How would you describe your music?

It’s quite hard because we get inspired by new things all the time so the music changes, but if we had to sum it up, it would be old school 90s rap, with a cool British twist. We love the old school rap flows and harmonies, but we’re also inspired by British sounds. I guess we’ve just pushed it altogether.

What is London to you and has being in London played a part in your music?

We love London; we say it all the time. We realise how lucky we were to be born here because black British culture is so interesting. The mix of Caribbean and English culture has played a huge part in our sound.

How can people find you?

Well, we have a website now where you can download our mixtape and find all the latest info on us, and we’re always talking away on our social networking sites. Our Facebook fan group is really cool, we chat to everyone quite intimately on there. I’ve just been introduced to a musician called RKZ, a UK Based artist who does everything a great musician does; express himself in a relatable way. I actually found this artist when he was featured on a bhangra track my friend was on AND I have to tell you- that track was BLOODY AWFULL- But he shined above the rest- some of the others had no lyrical ability at all which was a huge disappointment as they like to call themselves MC‘s! After the interest in his ability on that track I decided to check his mixtape and there are a lot of tracks good tracks that stood out for me, especially his Dubstep tracks on which he Raps AND sings. His lyrics are easy to understand, they make sense, I can relate to the and he has a good flow. Have to say my favourite track would be his Introduction track- excellent choice on instrumental- very quirky punch lined lyrics with a comical styles yet a serious tone. So Impressed that I decided to interview him! Mr RKZ:

So Mr RKZ – tell me a bit about yourself, a semi introduction about you, lifestyle, etc?

My name is RKZ. It’s an acronym for Ricks Kills Zebras. I was quite worried about how many people actually believed that. It’s shocking. But anyway. I’m a 20 year-old singer-songwriter/rapper/hype man/blogger/student. I like keeping myself busy and this lifestyle definitely delivers! You’ll always catch me at a busy time. I’m currently studying in London, which has benefited me greatly as it is the epicentre of everything artistic. Living in such an amazing place provides so much inspiration. I wouldn’t be doing anything else in the world right now and I’m studying Commercial Music, too.

What gained your interest in music, why music and when did you discover your talent?

I was lucky enough to be brought up in a musical family. Both parents and my sister are singers. My cousins that I grew up with are also very musically gifted (one being a singer, another being a percussionist). I pretty much just grew up learning and loving music. I only started taking it seriously around 3 to 4 years ago, so I’m still a newbie to this industry. A few of my friends were getting into recording, thus building home studios. I started messing around on beats friends of mine made and things kind of escalated.

What events or performances would you say are your highlights in your career thus far?

In terms of performances, I can’t really compare. I’ve had a few shows that have been equally good for completely different reasons. I’ve had some really good gigs at places including Luton Carnival, Loughborough Mela, Edinburgh and various clubs across London and Birmingham. Saying that, I think the most fun I have is when me and my musical friends are randomly singing down the road!

As an artist, what do you feel makes you different to other musicians out there in the industry?

Well, if I was to say I was unique in my own way - I'd pretty much be like everyone else. Everyone says they're unique; they're individuals. I'm just me. If people think I'm similar to artists, it's their opinion. I've always just had faith in my ability to sing and rap. I always have done. I feel that my USP is the fact you can't class myself as being a rapper, because I can sing; and you can't really class me as just being a singer, because I can rap. I suppose if I had to pick something that made me stand out a little, it'd be that.

Has London played a part in your life in regards to inspiration towards your music?

I can’t begin to explain the importance of being in London. The city is so diverse and creative. It’s my favourite city, period. From the randomness of Camden, the arts of Notting Hill, the fashion spots of Oxford Street and Covent Garden, plus the vast amount of people you see. I’ve met a lot of friends, musicians, and interesting people since I’ve been studying in London and I’m definitely looking to live here permanently once that finishes. Luton will always be my first home, but London is where I need to be.

What made you jump on Dubstep beats?

Dubstep is one of the fastest growing genres in Europe at the moment, so it was only a matter of time before I jumped on the bandwagon. I got into it after my friend at University (who’s a musician – and the guy that produced my Dubstep remix of Deuces) introduced me to people like Burial, Chase & Status, Sukh Knight and so on. I fell in love with it after hearing tracks that fused elements of Eastern Music, R&B, and Grime. For example – Eastern Jam by Chase & Status; P-Money & Sukh Knight’s Slang; and Jakwob’s remix of Ellie Goulding’s Under The Sheets & Starry Eyed. It’s f*cking filthy, and I couldn’t resist it!

Jobless Graduate Sues Her NY University

An unhappy graduate in New York is suing the university where she studied because she has been unable to find a job since finishing her degree.

Trina Thompson claimed Monroe College in the Bronx had failed to support her after she completed a BBA in Information Technology.

She filed a legal action last week, after four months of fruitless job hunting, the New York post reported.

The 27-year-old is demanding to be repaid her $70,000 (£41,700) tuition fees.

Ms Thompson said the university's careers service had not provided her with the contacts and advice it promised before she began studying.

A spokesman for the university rejected the claim.

Monroe College PR director Gary Axelbank said the lawsuit was completely without merit because the college does assist its graduates in finding employment.
